A strong advocate for later start times at Greenwich High School, Peter von Braun is planning a rally for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 at Town Hall and a petition drive.

The event would kick off the petition campaign, which calls for changing the high school’s start from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. or later.

The petition advocates for the schedule endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control.

“This is the beginning of the organizing effort so that we will be ready to kick the petition campaign into high gear at the start of school,” von Braun wrote in an email Sunday.

The results of the School Start Time  Survey conducted by the Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) earlier this year strongly supports the exploration of a change in school start times among parent, student and staff respondents.

The majority of parents (75%) and students (77%) responding are supportive or highly supportive of exploring a change in school start times. Staff were largely supportive (45%) or neutral (20%) in their support of exploring a change in school start times.

Superintendent of Schools Bill McKersie said he would recommend to the Board of Education in September 2015  a  work schedule for exploring optimal school start times.

The survey data will provide initial guidance for the School Start Time Steering Committee.
