Representatives from local non-profits gathered at Town Hall to ask the Community Development Advisory Committee for more funding

“As a private non-profit, we must raise the funds before we can give the green light to the project. We ask for $50,000 of the $200,000 needed to purchase the elevator,” said Debra Mecky of the Greenwich Historical Society.

And to thank the committee for funds already received.

“Thank you for recommending funding for our security upgrade, and also for our P.A. system,” said Takeia McAlister of the bOys and Girls Club.

This is the beginning of a long process the Town goes through to determine what non-profits will get town funds, and just how much each will receive.

“The subject matter of course is a challenging one because there re a finite number of federal resources available to Greenwich. It’s really determining how to best allocate those who best fit the criteria of the programs objectives,” said First Selectman Peter Tesei.

The Community Block Development Grant Program’s budget begins January 1, 2016. So far, the non-profits have requested funds for projects such as after school programs, facility repair, and educational needs. The Advisory Committee has looked at those numbers and made recommendations based on the budget, which totals just under $830,000.

“The needs are greater and greater, and the dollars are more finite,” said Tesei.

Next, the First Selectman will look over the Committee’s recommendations, and make changes as he sees fit. From there, the budget will go to the Board of Estimate and Taxation, and then the Representative Town Meeting for approval.
