For the first time, the Greenwich YMCA Marlins Swim Team had a swimmer qualify for the Olympic trials.

“It kind of just started out as a dream. I’ve always wanted to make it, it’s everyone’s goal,” said Alex Jahan.

Alex Jahan, swimming here in lane one, swam the 200 yard breaststroke at the Junior National Championships. He touched the wall with a time of 2:18:38, making the Olympic cut by 1/100 of a second.

“I didn’t actually see my time. The kid int he lane next to me asked me if that was my first trial cut. I looked up at the board, then I saw the time. It felt amazing,” said Jahan.

“The team had a great result at nationals I think because everyone was excited about the Olympic trial cut,” said head coach Connie Wu.

Alex practices everyday except Sunday, and practices twice a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“She has been my coach for as long as I’ve been swimming,” said Jahan.

“He’s in his junior year. It’s really special that he’s not going to college and he can come back for one more year,” said Wu.

The Olympic trials begin June 26 of next year. We will keep an eye on Alex as he swims his way through his senior year at Greenwich High School.
