The Bruce Museum’s Seaside Center has some new residents. These baby Northern Pufferfish were discovered off the shore of the Long island Sound during a seine demonstration and now live in a nursery at the Center.

“A seine is a large net with poles on each end and weights on the bottom, and floats on top,” said Cameron Driscoll.

Seaside Center intern Cameron Driscoll says they catch many different species using this method.

“The Sound acts as a nursery so there’s a lot of different species f small fish out there,” said Driscoll.

And these baby fish are less than a year old.

“They have a special organ near their stomach. When they are threatened, they blow themselves up to three times their size,” said Driscoll.

You can see the baby pufferfish and much more in person at the Seaside Center located at Greenwich Point this summer.
