It is hot out- people are cooling off in the Long Island Sound at Greenwich Point. But, before you head outside, here are some safety tips from Greenwich Hospital.

“It is really hot and it is really important this time of year if you’re outside exercising or playing sports, to limit the time you are doing it, drink plenty of water beforehand and during,” said Dr. Michael Canter of the Greenwich Hospital emergency department.

Dr. Canter says that the emergency department is seeing an increase in heat related illness such as dehydration.

“We are seeing some people who are getting too hot in their own houses. Additionally, we are seeing a lot of people who are outside enjoying the great weather and not drinking enough, and they became overcome with heat,” said Dr. Canter.

Dr. Canter says that people with pre-existing illness and sickness are most effected by the heat.

“It’s really important to understand that just being outside can make you sick. It’s best to stay inside and in air conditioning,” said Dr. Canter.

And if you don’t own an air conditioner….

“Once it gets over the 90 degree range and it’s really humid out, even being inside with a fan may not be enough. You may want to a friend or neighbor’s, or a cooling station,” said Dr. Canter.

Cooling stations around Greenwich include all libraries, the public safety complex, the Greenwich Senior Center, and the Western Greenwich Civic Center. But, if you are someone who has to be out in the sun or works outside, Dr. Canter suggests wearing lots of sunscreen and light colored clothing.

“Make sure you take plenty of breaks to get shade and rest to try to cool down a bit. Sunglasses are good too,” said Dr. Canter.
