Yesterday around sunset, the Greenwich Police Dept. Marine Division was out patrolling these waters off of Byram Beach. They noticed a capsized kayak few hundred feet off the coast of Bower’s Island, and when they got closer they saw a woman clinging to the side of it.

“We found her at 8:13 and sunset was at 8:22 p.m. And then we had a storm that came through the area about a half hour later, so it was pretty fortunate,” said Marine Officer Joseph Turcsanyi.

The 58 year old Greenwich resident is also fortunate she was wearing a life vest.

“The life vest kept her above water, but it wouldn’t keep her head from going down if she lost all her strength,” said Marine Officer Matthew Adamshak.

Police say she almost did lose all that strength- she wasn’t able to assist herself onto the police boat because she was so fatigued and showed signs of dehydration and hypothermia.

“She’s very fortunate the officers were out there patrolling because quite literally this could have been her life,” said Lt. Kraig Gray.

Police say that although the Long Island Sound seems very safe, safety precautions always need to be taken.

“You shouldn’t be out t night, you shouldn’t be going out at dusk. They don’t have lights. Nobody is going to see you out there,” said Adamshak.

“Anytime you’re out there, wear your vest. Whether you’re paddle boarding, kayaking, just take all the safety precautions to keep yourself safe,” said Gray.

Police report that the woman is in stable condition and want to stress the importance of water safety.
