Tucked away on West Putnam Avenue is Devita Karate, and in just under two weeks, athletes training here will be heading to Las Vegas for the International Tang Soo Do Tournament.

“We are going to have about 350 competitors. We have people from different states and different countries,” said Joseph Devita, owner of Devita Karate.

Devita Karate is sending about 8 competitors to the tournament.

“Our kids and adults will be competing in individual forms which are patterns and movements. They will also be competing in individual sparring and weapons,” said Devita.

Peter Negrea has been doing this style of karate for about 3 years and says he has been preparing for this tournament for months.

“We do a lot of sparring practice. We do a lot of drills and a lot of forms,” said Negrea.

And although it is an international competition, everyone has one thing in common.

“They are all speaking different languages, but they are all Tang Soo Do practitioners. There’s a brotherhood and sisterhood among us,” said Devita.

“I’m expecting to compete. I’m not necessarily expecting to place, but I’m going to really learn the different type of people that practice this martial art from all around the world and to meet some friends, and learn,” said Negrea.
