Despite the lack of runs during Monday’s back-and-forth matchup between the Greenwich Senior Babe Ruth All-Stars and Stamford, the contest featured three lead changes. However at the end it was Stamford that held on to upend Greenwich 3-2 and keep its season alive.

Stamford came out swinging in the first inning with a leadoff triple followed by a single to bring the run in.

Peter Delepine started on the mound for Greenwich and gave up only one run on three hits in four innings of work. He struck out two and walked two as well.

Greenwich took a temporary lead after recording four singles in the fourth inning and bringing in Carlos Fernandez in the top of the fifth inning for their second run of the game.

Stamford took the lead back by taking advantage of three Greenwich errors in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After letting a runner reach base on an infield error, a double from a Stamford batter turned into an inside-the-park homer with the help from two fielding errors on the part of Greenwich. The one hit of the inning scored two runs because of three defensive errors.

The 3-2 score held through the sixth and seventh innings and Greenwich was sent home after another deciding fifth inning.

“We threw the ball around a little bit which is never really a good thing,” Greenwich head coach Steve DeRosa said. “I think we just let the moment get ahead of us a little bit and threw the ball around and they were able to get two runs, which we couldn’t get back. It was a couple mistakes of being overzealous I would say, and how we were just trying to throw the ball around.”
