George Smith IV of Greenwich disappeared 10 years ago while aboard a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, and there has since been no arrests made in the case. Senator Richard Blumenthal met with members of George’s family to ask for support of his new mandate, the Cruise Passenger Protection Act of 2015.

“Passengers should not be abandoned at sea when it comes to protection of crimes that would never be tolerated on American land,” said Blumenthal.

“The lack of answers and justice with my brother’s murder is the perfect example of why the Cruise Passenger Protection Act of 2015 is so important,” said Bree Smith.

This act would protect passengers from crime by having Coast Guard certified sea marshals aboard ships, strengthening the use of video surveillance, improving medical standards, and among other requirements.

“It provides for man overboard detection so that anybody falling overboard will trigger an alarm and there will be video footage,” said Blumenthal.

Blumenthal says that 12 people have gone overboard in 2015 alone and this bill could help change those numbers in the future. This legislation will also be introduced to the House of Representatives.
