At a special meeting last night, the Board of Selectman unanimously approved municipal improvement status for the plan known as Scheme D for a new, New Lebanon Elementary School.

“I am very delighted that the Selectmen have supported Scheme D,” said Chairman Barbara O’Neill.

The plan calls for a two story C shaped school that creates two play-areas, and has front access from Mead Avenue, and rear access for safety reasons.

“I think the architects have been very clever with how they have designed the building on the site so it has lots of possibilities. It leaves the library and the field untouched, and that’s one of the big concerns of the community,” said O’Neill.

“This plan incorporates the site of the existing school and some of the accompanying perimeter of the property. It ties nicely into he landscape. It does not impact dramatically the existing neighborhood where you have a field, narrow streets,” said First Selectman Peter Tesei.

This approval comes after two previous plan rejections from the board. Next, the plan will go to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

“In addition, the Board of Education has a request for MI to put modular classrooms at Western Middle School. The Board of Estimate and Taxation and the RTM will be looking at the funding for that,” said Tesei.

Officials say there is no architect selected for the project at this time.
