The Syracuse Half Ironman that was held on June 21 had 2,026 athletes competing from around the world and nine of them were from Greenwich-based Combine Training.

“From torrential rain, to glimmers of sun, to unrelenting humidity and winds that played havoc with us throughout the day, the Syracuse Ironman 70.3 2015 was a race to remember,” said Liz Tremain, who was one of the Combine athletes who competed in the recent Half Ironman race in Syracuse, NY.

In addition to Tremain, Joe Turcsanyi, Jim Gillespie, Marc Whatley, Joe Profaci, Emma Langley, Tim Muccia, AJ Hoffman and Combine Training owner Craig Vitale all competed at the event.

The course itself was challenging. Competitors faced a 1.2-mile swim in Jamesville Reservoir, followed by a 56-mile bike ride, looping through Onondaga, Madison, and Cortland counties. The final 13.1-miles were a run throughout Jamesville Beach County Park, facing a plethora of rolling hills.

The weather offered no relief; scattered stages of torrential downpour were offset with periods of sun as the athletes endured relentless humidity.

Nonetheless, with the help of Combine Training, Tremain said she found herself well-coached and well-prepared to make Syracuse a race to remember.

Not only was she able to accomplish a great deal, but she learned just as much about herself through the race, finishing second in her age group and setting a new personal record.

Located on 469 West Putnam Avenue, Combine Training uses the slogan “We Build Athletes,” working alongside their clients as coaches rather than personal trainers.

As Tremain can attest, this form of training has been very successful. Furthermore, the Syracuse Half Ironman results support the success of Combine. Of the nine Combine athletes who competed over the weekend, nearly half placed in the top 20 in their age group. Keeping in mind the other 2,026 competitors, this standing is impressive.
