Greenwich Rugby 7’s Win Tri-State Tournament in Danbury

In grand fashion, Greenwich Rugby won the Tri-State 7’s Rugby Tournament in Danbury on Saturday.

In pool play Greenwich beat the New York Rugby Club 52-0, Aspetuck Conn. 45-12, Central CT 70-0 and Play Rugby of N.Y. 26-5.  In the semi-finals they then went on to defeat the Union Mud Turtles, NJ 26-7, and then won the Championship Game against Play Rugby, NY 36-12.

Greenwich High School’s Jack Freiheit scored 12 tries on the day, while Soh Nakayama added nine tries and kicked 10 conversions. Also from GHS, Mitch Nethercott scored four tries, while Bryce Stanback added three, Thomas Williams two, and Kevin Kumar one try.

Parker Kelly and Windsor Doyle, also from Greenwich High, contributed in the tournament.

Two area players playing with the Greenwich team this summer also added scoring points as Connor Bercik, from Fairfield Prep, scored five tries and kicked 13 conversions, and Lewis Grassie, from Aspetuck, added three more tries.

Next up for the Greenwich Rugby 7’s team is the Hell Gate 7’s Tournament at Randall’s Island, N.Y. on July 11.
