Physical training, practicing self defense, meeting the K-9 unit, and going to the gun range- sounds like an average day for the Greenwich Police Dept. But, these 7th 8th and 9th graders got to experience all this during the Youth Citizens Police Academy.

“It’s an outreach program to get kids to understand that cops are regular people too and so they can learn some things to make them safer,” said Chief Jim Heavey.

Officials says this it is important to teach this age group all about the department and how it functions.

“You can’t start too soon with people learning to be responsible for their own actions, and for them to have a positive interaction with the police. If we can get them to understand that we work as a partnership, and when they need help, we aren’t the bad guys, that’s going to go a long way. They will remember that for a long time,” said Chief Heavey.

After spending a few days in the youth citizens police academy, the kids graduated here at the Seton Reservation.
