Greenwich U-10 All-Stars eliminated from tournament play

Despite strong hitting, the Greenwich U-10 All-Stars couldn’t overcome some defensive miscues and timely hitting by both New Canaan and tournament host Milford.

In each game, Greenwich appeared to be the stronger team, with great first inning pitching and live bats building early leads that would eventually evaporate in the middle innings due to some inaccurate pitching, a few unlucky bounces and stellar defense played by each opponent that kept the Greenwich batters at bay.

Late-inning rallies in each game came up short, ending the boys’ summer together—but leaving coaches, parents and players encouraged for future competition in the years ahead.

In the first game, a 7-4 loss to New Canaan, relief pitcher Wyatt Gibson kept Greenwich in the game, effectively shutting down New Canaan and allowing Greenwich to mount a comeback behind RBIs by Alex Giannuzzi and Tommy Healey.

As the rain became more fierce in the sixth, so did the Greenwich attack. With two men on in the inning, the comeback was cut short by the second double play of the day turned by New Canaan and some nifty glove work by the New Canaan first baseman.

Under the lights on Monday night, Greenwich jumped to an early 4-0 lead against Milford as each player made strong contact at the plate and had a tight first inning both on the mound and in the field.

However, it wasn’t to be. Yet again, unearned runs quickly eliminated that early lead in the bottom of the second, leaving Greenwich chasing Milford the rest of the way.

The Greenwich bats were lively and once again, the aggressor was defeated, as Greenwich’s lack of patience at the plate helped Milford pitching settle in and gain control. Greenwich’s best chances came in the fifth and sixth innings when the boys had numbers on the bases and some quality hits by Caden Leidich, Ryan Perez, Javier Serra, and Danny Fox.

However, the promise of each inning was cut down on the bases, including a questionable putout at the plate in the 6th inning, giving Milford the valuable outs they needed as it grew late. Milford was able to close the door on Greenwich in the top of the sixth and move onto face Norwalk.

Despite the result, head coach Ben Jones was impressed with the heart and mettle on display from Greenwich.

“I’m proud of the way our kids fought as a team,” said Jones. “The coaches really believed we were a bounce away in each game. It would’ve been easy to get down; instead, our team grew stronger as the adversity mounted.”

Assistant coaches Bill Healey and Nick Giannuzzi added, “The experience these kids earned is priceless. It will serve them well in the years to come. The worst part is that the coaches have to retire their tight baseball pants for the summer.”
