Two weeks ago, Greenwich Crew athletes competed in the USRowing Youth National Championship regatta in Sarasota, Fla.

The hot and humid climate did not stop this Northeast team from racing hard and finding successful results.

Racing began on Friday with heats, and continued with repechages and semi-finals on Saturday and finals on Sunday.

“I am very pleased,” said Mike Wieneke, Director of Rowing at Greenwich Crew. “Sending the largest group down there, we were excited to see several great performances. The women’s lightweight-8 had such a great finish and it was impressive racing. On the men’s side, the heavyweight-8 and lightweight-8 both went down and put up some goof fights against strong crews from around the country. I think it was a good experience across the board for all the athletes and a great stepping stone for our overall program.”

The Women’s Lightweight-8 of Paulina Goossens, Claire Miller, Brakeley Bryant, Jackie Steinman, Clara Chambers, Molly Lesser, Isabelle Myers, Julia Davis and Elana Weinstein had an stellar race on Friday in their heat, narrowly missing second place by a mere three-tenths of a seconds.

After another standout race on Saturday, the Women’s Lightweight-8 won their C Final on Sunday, finishing with the seventh fastest time overall.

Due to some weather complications, both heats for the Greenwich Crew men were moved from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.

The Men’s Youth Lightweight-8 of Jimmy Catalano, Matt Matejak, Sean Keyser, Eric Lee, Jack Seavey, Derek Woo, James Smith, Philip Smith and Alex Hatzis raced well early on Saturday morning, earning a time that was competitive with many fast crews from around the country.

In their final, they ended with the 18th fastest time overall and were mere centimeters behind the next fastest crew.

The Men’s Youth-8 of Colm McDermott, Jack McDonough, Danny Papes, Andrew Hoffmeister, Brian Phillips, Blake Manca, Malcolm Nash, Caleb Edmundson and Cole Korzendorfer had a great opportunity to compete against some very fast crews.

They raced well early on Saturday morning, placing fourth in their heat.

The Men’s Youth-8 boat went on to race again in their rep on Saturday afternoon and also placed fourth, narrowly missing their final by .8 seconds.

“It’s an eye-opening experience for many of the athletes,” Wieneke said. “As the program continues to grow and being a young team this year, it was a great opportunity for the athletes to go down and see what the rest of the country is doing. Some times we get used to being in our bubble in the Northeast and to get outside that bubble and race against some of the fastest crews from across the country was a huge learning experience and opportunity.”

Participating in the USRowing Youth National Championship was a great honor for all Greenwich Crew athletes involved and with one of the largest groups ever in Greenwich Crew’s history, the team hopes to qualify even more athletes next year.
