Henry Harris is spending the summer before his senior year at Brunswick riding across the country, and he will be doing it all on a bike.

“3,000 miles. We are going to start with our back tire int he Atlantic Ocean and finish with our front tires in the Pacific Ocean,” said Harris.

Harris will depart from South Carolina on June 25 with 12 other high schoolers and two group leaders.

“I know our mail stops- they are in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Nevada,” said Harris.

Although Harris says this is something he has wanted to do for a few years now, he is also biking for a good cause. He is raising awareness and funds for CHAMPS, or Children Against Mines Program, and is sponsoring a landmine sniffing dog to help those in warn-torn countries. This dog will be named after the late Brunswick teacher Robert Cosby.

“He was very famous for his handshake. Every morning, people looked forward to that. So we decided to start a club for CHAMPS, and raise for a dog in his name,” said Harris.

Harris says the plan is to arrive in Los Angeles by August 6.

“I think it is going to be a life changing experience,” said Harris.
