The Brunswick School crew team traveled to Fairfax County, Va. to race on the Occoquan River at the National Schools’ Championship Regatta.

The event is an invitation-only championship for United States schools. Brunswick’s Varsity-8 won a bronze medal in a time of 4:25.17.

The crew consisted of sophomore coxswain Emmett Bell, junior stroke Will Bass, junior Will Powers, senior Matt Marvin, senior co-captain Jack Duggan, junior Thomas Kern, junior Gamble Freydburg, senior Conor Winston and senior bowman Freddie Polak.

This strong performance closed out a season which saw them make the grand finals at both the Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the NEIRA Championship Regatta.

The Brunswick Second Varsity-8 earned a silver medal in their event behind a fast boat from St. Joe’s Prep from Philadelphia. The Brunswick boat posted its fastest time of the year (4:30.26), but finished a little more than a half a length behind the Stotesbury Cup champions from St. Joe’s Prep.

The Bruins line-up consisted of sophomore coxswain Alec Esmond, senior stroke David Ruf, senior co-captain Chase Stitzer, sophomore Matthew Womble, senior co-captain Reed McMurchy, junior Alexander Kutner, junior Ridgley Knapp, sophomore Alex Wada and sophomore bowman Will Marvin.

This was Brunswick’s first trip to this regatta, and they were able to represent the New England region well at the national level, coming home with two sets of medals.
