Warmer, summer weather means the possibility that you might get a tick.
I spoke with the Global Lyme Alliance on prevention tips and what to do
if you do get a tick.

“We recommend wearing light color clothes and tying your hair back. And
as funny or nerdy as it may look, tuck your pants into your socks so the
ticks can’t get under your pants,” said Dr. Harriet Kotsoris of the Global
Lyme Alliance.

Dr. Kotsoris says people should use common sense when it comes to preventing
ticks. She suggests staying away from dark, humid areas where ticks hide,
and avoid walking through tall grassy areas.

“Avoid wood piles and any places where small rodents tend to congregate because
they are secondary reserviors,” said Kotsoris.

But, if you are going on a hike or gardening,

“Take your clothes off and throw them in the dryer for about 20 minutes to
kill all the ticks and then shower,” said Kotsoris.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over 2000 people
in Connecticut got Lyme Disease from ticks in 2013.

“Lyme disease is traditionally thought of like a flu like illness with fever,
chills, headache, and muscle aches. Less than half the time, you may have the
bullseye,” said Kotsoris.

Greenwich residents can get ticks tested at the Town’s Health Department located
in Town Hall.
