The Greenwich High School Student Center was full of energy for the
AVID class of 2015 Celebration.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a four
year program to help students prepare for college.

“Without it, I don’t know if I would have applied to college. It was such
a hassle,” said Cassie Cortina.

Many of the students in the AVID program are the first in their families
to go to college.

“I am going to Norwalk Community College for two years, then transferring
to Southern.”

“Penn State.”

But the students say AVID is more than just a class.

“It’s like a family. You stay with them for four years. It’s more than
friendship,” said Daniel Torres.

“I may have known like four or five people in my class, but now I’m close
with everyone. My best friends are in the class,” said Cortina.

The Greenwich Alliance for Education fully funds the program and each student
received a gift card to spend on books in the fall.
