Local Crew Teams Fare Well at Annual Founders Day Regatta

A plethora of local teams competed in the Founders Day Regatta, hosted annually by the Gunnery School on Lake Waramaug in Litchfield County. Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Crew and Brunswick School battled the 1,500-meter course, as well as the best competition around, and fared well during the event, which took place May 3.

The Bruins split their top two eights into four coxed fours for the event. In the first four, the team of Will Powers, Will Bass, Thomas Kern, Freddie Polak and coxswain Emmett Bell won their preliminary heat with a time of 5:24.275, but fell to fourth in the grand finals, posting a time of 5:12.604.

Just like the first fours boat, the Brunswick second fours boat took gold in their heat. The group of Matt Marvin, Jack Duggan, Conor Winston, Gamble Freydberg and coxswain Alec Esmond finished tops, with a time of 5:38.069. In the finals, it was a back-and-forth battle with Kent, but Kent pulled away late to gain gold and a time of 5:07.682. The Bruins crossed second with a time of 5:08.160.

In the third fours, Brunswick also was solid, as the team of David Ruf, Chase Sitzer, Matt Womble, Will Marvin and coxswain Conor Boyle took second in the qualifying heat (6:112.062) and third in the grand finals with at time of 5:29.630.

In another tight race for gold, the Brunswick fourth fours boat comprised of Alexander Kutner, Reed McMurchy, Alex Wada, Ridgley Knapp and coxswain Alec Esmond finished second in the grand finals with a time of 5:25.600. Salisbury took top honors with a time of 5:25.440.

Also having a stellar day was Greenwich Crew, based out of the Greenwich Water Club.

The girls’ first four boat of Sophie Perez, Isabel Meskers, Phoebe Long, Vivienne Logsdail and Virgina Sideleva took second in the petite finals with a time of 6:01.656 and just edged past Greenwich Academy. Earlier in the day, they took third in their heat with a time of 6:19.507.

On the boys’ side, the first fours team of Jimmy Catalano, Jack McDonough, Brian Phillips, Andrew Hoffmeister and Danny Papes took fifth in their grand final with a time of 5:15.268. They started the day with a second place finish in the third heat (5:15.245).

Both the boys’ and girls’ second fours from Greenwich Crew had a top five finish in the finals. On the boys’ side, the second fours team of Tyler Yung, Caleb Edmundson, Malcolm Nash, Blake Manca and Cole Korzendorfer took fifth overall with a time of 5:25.724, while the girls team of Paulina Goossens, Claire Miller, Laura Navarette, Jackie Steinman and Clara Chambers finished two spots better, grabbing the bronze and a time of 5:53.702.

Greenwich Crew had another strong showing in the third fours. For the girls team, the group of Stina Arstorp, Isabel Rose, Maeve Markowitz, Katherine Ellis and Maxine McMillan took home third in the finals and were about eight seconds away from the silver, grabbing a time of 6:05.938. On the boys’ side, the team of Jimmy Catalano, Matt Matejak, Sean Keyser, Eric Lee and Michael McRae finished fourth on the day at finals, posting a time of 5:29.072. The boys team was only two seconds away from Brunswick in third place.

Not to be outdone was the Greenwich Academy crew team.

In their first fours, the team of Anushya Makam, Lulu Hedstrom, Emma Morrison, Bella Crawford and Remi Bohbot placed fourth in the third heat with a time of 6:12.443 and finished the first petite final one step better, in third with a time of 6:02.488.

In the third heat of the second fours, the GA team of Emma Osman, Dana Wadsworth, Ciara Santry, Annie Harris and Phoebe Morris struck gold with a time of 6:22.304, nearly three seconds faster than Choate. In the second fours grand finals, the Gators took fifth overall and were two seconds away from Choate in fourth, posting a time of 6:05.904.
