Greenwich Rugby Team Prepares for Trip to Nationals

The Greenwich rugby team is preparing for an upcoming trip to
nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina. I talked with the team
about their trip, the sport of rugby, and their great success.

“Get the ball, pass it backwards, and hit the guys against you.”

“Passing the ball backwards, trying to put it down in the end
zones for footballs,” said Michael McTiernan.

And the Greenwich rugby team has been the best in the state at
doing exactly that for the past 7 years.

“We have been very lucky with gifted athletes. It’s been tremendous,”
said head coach Joe Kelly.

Rugby runs in the family for some team mates.

“I played rugby with my brothers. My cousin is USA player, so he
really got me into it. My father played, my uncles played,” said
McTiernan.

And some have even been playing together for 8 plus years.

“A bunch of us played and went to Ireland, France, we toured across
the world,” aid McTiernan.

This season, the Cardinals have just two losses.

“We are having a really great season so far. We gotten two really
close games against top three opponents. Looking really strong going
to nationals,” said Jack Weigold.

Big Red is currently ranked fourth in the country and seeded fifth in
the championship bracket for the national high school tournament.

“There is just nothing that can intimidate us now. We are going down
with 35 kids. All 35 kids do believe that we have a very good chance
of coming back national champions,” said Kelly.

“I expect a tough fight for three games, but I think if we play the
best we can, we can win it,” said Thomas Williams.

“It would be great to get some hardware coming back,” said Weigold.
