It’s not everyday that you see horses away from the polo field and on Greenwich Avenue. But on Wednesday evening that is exactly what happened.

“It’s great. It is a way to get polo closer to people,” said 9 Goal Polo Player Mariano Aguerre who plays for White Birch

“It’s helping people realize that this is a life sport. It’s exciting and everyone can come!,” said Mariana Castro, Director of Marketing for the Greenwich Polo Club.

Families were able to get up close to two of the Greenwich Polo Club’s horses and talk to some of the players ahead of the start of the East Coast Open.

“This is a very historic tournament that started in 1905. We have been playing it for a few years now but we felt that this year is really important because we have partnered with the United States Polo Association and we have brought the trophy, the Perry Trophy, back to life! So we decided this was a good year to bring more awareness to polo” said Castro.

“We expect this year’s East Coast Open to draw the best high-goal players from around the globe to compete for the title and to have their names added to the Perry Cup, ” said Greenwich Polo Club founder Peter Brant. “Fans will get to experience world-class polo played at a beautiful venue and for the first time, the tournament will stream live and culminate with a nationally televised broadcast.”

And players say being able to meet spectators off the field helps the polo community grow in town.

“Greenwich has a big polo community. People have been coming here for many many years. They know the game, they support the game and they support the teams and it is great. My wish is that it keeps growning,” said Aguerre.

Hilario Ulloa, another 9 Goal Polo player from White Birch said, “I think it is great for polo that people from Greenwich come and see the horses and the players. If we don’t do this, many people might not know there is polo going on in Greenwich. People come across the street, they see the horses and they ask and realize that polo is happening in town so it is great.”

The 2015 East Coast Open will start on Sunday, August 23, 2015, continue on Sunday, August 30, 2015 and conclude with the Championship Match on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at the Greenwich Polo Club. For more information, visit www.greenwichpoloclub.com.
